Background of the Study
Community radio in Ibadan plays a vital role in disseminating local information, preserving culture, and fostering social cohesion. Yoruba, the primary language used in these broadcasts, is characterized by a range of discourse strategies that presenters employ to engage listeners and maintain conversational flow. These strategies include the use of culturally resonant greetings, storytelling techniques, and deliberate code-switching between formal and informal registers (Oluwaseun, 2023). Effective discourse strategies ensure that messages are delivered with clarity and that the presenters connect with their diverse audiences. However, the increasing influence of digital media and commercialization pressures may challenge the traditional discourse practices, potentially leading to a dilution of cultural content and reduced listener engagement. This study examines the discourse strategies used by Yoruba community radio presenters in Ibadan, employing discourse analysis of recorded broadcasts, interviews with presenters, and audience surveys. The aim is to understand how these strategies evolve in response to modern media trends while preserving the cultural essence of Yoruba communication.

Statement of the Problem
The rapid evolution of digital media and commercialization in Ibadan is challenging the traditional discourse strategies used by Yoruba community radio presenters (Oluwaseun, 2023). As presenters adapt to new media formats, there is a risk that the culturally rich discourse practices, such as indigenous greetings and narrative techniques, may be compromised, leading to a loss of authenticity and reduced audience engagement (Suleiman, 2024). This shift undermines the effectiveness of community radio as a tool for cultural preservation and local communication. Research is needed to evaluate these changes and propose strategies to support effective discourse.

Objectives of the Study

  • To document traditional discourse strategies among Yoruba radio presenters.

  • To assess the impact of digital and commercial influences on these strategies.

  • To recommend methods for preserving cultural authenticity in radio discourse.

Research Questions

  • What discourse strategies are traditionally used in Yoruba community radio?

  • How are these strategies affected by modern media influences?

  • What measures can help sustain effective and culturally rich communication?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates discourse strategies in Yoruba among community radio presenters in Ibadan, offering insights for broadcasters, cultural custodians, and media educators. The findings will help develop strategies to preserve indigenous communication practices in the face of modern challenges (Oluwaseun, 2023; Suleiman, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Yoruba discourse in community radio in Ibadan and does not address national media or other language forms.

Definitions of Terms

  • Discourse Strategies: Techniques used to structure and convey messages.

  • Community Radio: Local broadcast stations serving specific communities.

  • Yoruba: The indigenous language of the Yoruba people.
